When adults were done celebrating they headed out to movie theaters in record-breaking Christmas Day numbers. Both Les Miserables and Django Unchained rang up holiday cheer for their respective studios, with Les Mis setting a new weekday Christmas opening record according to The Hollywood Reporter as well as the biggest opening day in theaters for any musical. And Quentin Tarantino's bloody and violent Western comedy/action movie Django Unchained bounced Ali from first place on the best R-rated Christmas Day opening in box office history.
Both films performed better than expected and while box office success doesn't necessarily equal Oscar attention, it certainly can't hurt either film's chances at being recognized by Academy voters.
