The HobbitMoviegoers said yes to this return trip to the land of hobbits, dwarves, wizards, and elves as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey debuted with a record-breaking opening weekend. However, not to take anything away from The Hobbit's new December records, it should be noted that the film did not reach the $100 million mark domestically over its opening weekend- and it would be ridiculous to say no one expected it to. And when you take into considered the higher ticket prices for IMAX and 3D screenings, then it actually did not live up to Lord of the Rings opening weekends (according to BoxOfficeMojo). Still, Warner Bros has to be happy that it did snag the top December opening weekend spot and that it appears audiences will be ready for more Hobbit adventures in 2013.
