Guardians of the Galaxy

Deadline's reporting the current short list for the role of Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy has at least eight names on it including Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace, and Joel Edgerton. Also being mentioned are Garrett Hedlund, Jack Huston, James Marsden, Eddie Redmayne, and Sullivan Stapleton.

Breaking down the contenders: Sturgess should have experienced a career bump following Cloud Atlas, however the film underperformed (no fault of Sturgess') and most likely won't have the impact it should have on the roles he's being offered. Edgerton was terrific opposite Tom Hardy in Warrior and has Zero Dark Thirty and The Great Gatsby coming up. Lee Pace stole scenes from, among others, Tommy Lee Jones in Lincoln and was one of the best things about the final Twilight movie. Garrett Hedlund's been hanging on the edge of having a major breakthrough role and is a solid choice for GotG. And James Marsden is no stranger to big action blockbusters having played Cyclops in the X-Men franchise. Eddie Redmayne will likely gather a larger fan following when Les Miserables is released, while Sullivan Stapleton (Animal Kingdom) is still a relative unknown to American audiences.

James Gunn is directing the Marvel Studios project, and so far concrete details have been few and far between.

Disney and Marvel are planning an August 1, 2014 release of Guardians of the Galaxy.
