The Spirit Awards used to pride themselves on being the more casual version of the Oscars, with the ceremony taking place in a tent on the beach during the day. In recent years the attitude has shifted, and the Film Independent Spirit Awards have lost a bit of their edge because of it. Still, a Spirit Award nomination is a huge honor for the films nominated, and this year the two films battling it out to be the award show's top dog are David O Russell's Silver Linings Playbook and Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom.
Although there were very few surprises on the list, Film Independent did pull off one major shocker in the Best Supporting Male category. Steven Soderbergh's been championing Matthew McConaughey's work in Magic Mike and his campaign to get McConaughey recognition paid off with a Best Supporting Male nod. McConaughey also earned a Best Male Lead nomination for his work in Killer Joe.
