While Twihards may be a little sad now that the fifth and final Twilight film, Breaking Dawn Part 2, has been released in theaters, Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate have nothing to cry about. Breaking Dawn Part 2 didn't set a new Twilight record over its domestic opening weekend, but it did post an incredible $141 million opening (including the Thursday midnight shows) which is second in the series to New Moon's first three days in release at $142.8 million. Breaking Dawn Part 2 also didn't manage to beat Lionsgate's The Hunger Games opening weekend numbers, nor did it best The Avengers' $207 million or The Dark Knight Rises' $160 million (numbers courtesy of BoxOfficeMojo). But it's still an impressive opening weekend for the last film of the sparkling vampire franchise.
Worldwide, Breaking Dawn Part 2 did manage to set a new record for the franchise. Breaking Dawn Part 2's worldwide opening weekend - adding together the domestic and overseas grosses - totaled $340.9 million. It's overseas numbers were up over previous films of the series, and it also interested more males this time around than it's ever done before.
