According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures Animation is bringing the TV series Manimal to life on the big screen. Honestly, I greeted this news with, "Huh? What's a Manimal?" The title sort of rolls off your tongue, but the series itself must not have been all that much fun as it only ran for one season back in 1983. And if it couldn't survive for more than eight episodes in the '80s, it'd be interesting to know the compelling reason(s) behind making it into a big budget animated feature film now. Or, maybe it was an awesome series cancelled far too soon that's finally getting a shot at a new life - and I've just somehow missed out on the Manimal hype all these years.
THR says Sony Pictures Animation is planning on making the Manimal movie as a CGI/live-action hybrid. Note to SPA: Please leave the name as simply Manimal. I'm growing really fond of that the more I type out the name, although it does make me think of The Muppets' "Mahna Mahna" song...
There's no word yet on who will direct or who will star as the man who can transform into any animal he wants to in order to fight bad guys and keep the world safe.
