The Place Beyond the Pines, one of the hot properties at this year's Toronto Film Festival, has found a U.S. distributor with Focus Features emerging the winning bidder. Focus will be aiming for a 2013 release of the dramatic film co-written and directed by Derek Cianfrance and starring Bradley Cooper, Ryan Gosling, and Eva Mendes.
The Place Beyond the Pines, which is world premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, reunites Cianfrance with his Blue Valentine star Gosling. The cast also includes Rose Byrne, Mahershala Ali, Dane DeHaan, Bruce Greenwood, Ray Liotta, and Ben Mendelsohn.
In the announcement of the acquisition, Focus CEO James Schamus and president Andrew Karpen stated: "Derek Cianfrance has made a bold, epic, and emotionally generous saga, once again showing a master's hand in eliciting searingly beautiful performances from the actors with whom he collaborates."
The official synopsis: The film powerfully explores the consequences of motorcycle rider Luke (Gosling)'s fateful decision to commit a crime to support his child. The incident renders him targeted by policeman Avery (Cooper), and the two men become locked on a tense collision course which will have a devastating impact on both of their families in the years following.
