The Amazing Spider-Man lived up to its 'amazing' title, breaking the Tuesday box office record held by 2007's Transformers in its first full day of release. The Amazing Spider-Man, the reboot of the franchise, rung up $7.5 million in midnight screenings and drew $4 million in business from IMAX screenings.
So, how do the numbers stack up against the three previous Spider-Man films? The original Spider-Man directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst opened on Friday, May 3, 2002 and grossed $39.4 million. Spider-Man 2 followed on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 and earned $40.4 million. And Spider-Man 3 (easily the worst film of the franchise) picked up $59.8 million on Friday, May 4, 2007.
