There are new developments on the first film of The Mortal Instruments series, City of Bones. First, what's not new but needs to be mentioned: Screen Gems is no longer involved and director Scott Stewart (Priest) has moved on to other projects. Now for the latest updates: Lily Collins is still attached (as confirmed by author Cassandra Clare and a press release from Constantin Film), the film will begin shooting August 15th in Toronto, and The Karate Kid helmer Harald Zwart has been tapped to direct.
Clare also added this little tidbit in one of her blog posts while commenting on the press release: "Jamie [Campbell Bower's] not mentioned in the article, but he's still attached to the project -- it's just an article about Lily and Harald, and now that all the i's and t's are crossed and dotted with Lily they're probably doing the same with Jamie in terms of blocking his time. My speculation there, though."
In the official announcement of Collins and Zwart's involvement in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, producer Robert Kulzer stated, "Lily Collins is the perfect Clary. Harald Zwart really understands the visuals and heart of The Mortal Instruments. That was crucial to us. Of course, having Cassandra Clare's support throughout and collaborating with her on this project has been especially rewarding."
For those who aren't familiar with Clare's TMI books, it's a six part series with parts 1 - 4 four currently available, part five coming this May, and part six set for a May 2014 release. The books are, in order, City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls, and City of Heavenly Fire.
The City of Bones synopsis: "Set in contemporary New York City, a seemingly ordinary teenager Clary Fray, discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of warriors dedicated to driving demons out of our world. When Clary's mother disappears, she must join a daring group of young Shadowhunters on an adventure, which leads her through a city filled with mischievous fairies, eccentric warlocks, werewolf gangs and other strange creatures."
