Back in February 2008, Big Eyes was moving forward with Kate Hudson attached to star. And then, nothing... But now the project is apparently back on track, with Variety reporting Reese Witherspoon is taking on the role Hudson was supposed to have played and Ryan Reynolds co-starring opposite her.
Big Eyes is based on the life of Margaret Keane, the artist best known for painting kids with huge eyes. Witherspoon will play Margaret and Reynolds is set to play her ex-husband, Walter, who for years took credit for all of Margaret's paintings, going as far as to sign his own name on each of the prints. Margaret eventually won the battle of who truly did the paintings in court when she painted in front of a judge.
In a statement to Variety, co-writer/directors Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski talked about the casting of Witherspoon and Reynolds: "We are ecstatic to have this dream cast for our dream project. Walter is a larger-than-life antihero -- charming, funny, dangerous, and a little crazy. Ryan will knock it out of the park. As for Reese, she will be perfect as Margaret -- soulful, decent, transforming from vulnerability to learning to fight for herself."
Filming is finally expected to get underway this spring.
