Ricky Gervais introduced Colin Firth by calling him racist and by saying he saw him punch a little blind kid. This is what passes for humor this year at the Golden Globes. Firth took it well, commenting on the people protesting outside the theater before moving on to read off the Best Actress in a Drama nominees.
This year's winner is Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady. Streep's been nominated a lot this year but she isn't a sure thing due to strong competition in this category and the lack of real critical support for the film. (Viola Davis has been the favorite to win)
"Oh my god, when Ricky Gervais' deal fell through and they came to me to play Margaret Thatcher... I can't joke. This is such a thrill, but really, really embarrassing in a year that saw so many extraordinary performances by women in leading roles," said Streep. And then she got bleeped because it appeared she forgot her glasses and couldn't read her speech... Wow, what a weird moment.
Streep moved on to talking about the new flock of birds (actresses) she's proud of, England, Weinstein, and the director. HFPA started the music to play her off, but she refused to go.
