Producer/director J.J. Abrams and his cast are heading back to the final frontier, with filming just kicking off on the new, still-untitled Star Trek movie. Paramount Pictures announced today the film has indeed finally, officially started shooting in Los Angeles.
Paramount also confirmed the return of Chris Pine as Captain James T Kirk, John Cho as Sulu, Bruce Greenwood as Captain Christopher Pike, Simon Pegg as Scott, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Karl Urban as Bones McCoy, and Anton Yelchin as Chekov. The returning crew is being joined by Star Trek newbies Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller.
Alex Kurtzman & Robert Orci & Damon Lindelof wrote the script. Abrams and Paramount are aiming for a May 17, 2013 release of the 3D film (which will hopefully be worthy of the format).
Abrams' first Star Trek was released in 2009 and grossed $385 million before exiting theaters.

Tried to get through to Abrams. Drove him as limo drive along with the late Dennis Hopper who was buying JJ a special (fitted) golf clubs at Taylor Made in Carlsbad, CA a few years back.
Highly suggest JJ bring Jeri Ryan into movie cast as Janice Rand to ad cougar angle to Kirk – Rand sexual tension (bringing it into more modern terms). This would be a win win win (for Ryan, Abrams, and older Trekkers). And it would bring even more depth to the script.
Even if Alice Eve is slated to be Yeoman Janice Rand, Ryan could be her mother Lieutenant Commander Janice Rand and still chase Kirk around the captain’s chair as a modern up date to the old theme of sexual tensions between the two. If you have JJ’s ear… please pass along the idea. Thanks!!!
Tremendously excited to see Benedict Cumberbatch in this film. He’s one of the greatest actors of his generation if not THE greatest.
