Michael Fassbender (Jane Eyre, X-Men: First Class, A Dangerous Method) and director Steve McQueen first worked together on the 2008 biopic Hunger which told the story of a hunger strike led by Irish republican Bobby Sands. And now the actor and director have reunited for the very provocative drama Shame which finds Fassbender playing a sex addict and Carey Mulligan co-starring as his troubled sister. The film landed the dreaded NC-17 but Fox Searchlight took a chance on Shame and not only launched the film in select theaters but also is pushing it for possible awards consideration.
Discussing the NC-17 rating, director McQueen said, "It's sex. I think it's what most of the people in this room have done, if not all of us have done. I mean I've never held a gun in my hand in my life. It's this weird thing, where what we do in our daily lives should be sort of somehow censored. It's very odd. And things that we have no idea of and have no capability of doing, should be viewed on the masses. For me, it's just normal." Read more...
