Ridley Scott's return to the sci-fi genre isn't going to be over with Prometheus. Scott's apparently ready to return to the world of Blade Runner with a "follow-up" to that 1982 film that he'll be directing, according to Alcon Entertainment. Scott directed the original Blade Runner, which was based on Philip K Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, and is considered by genre fans to be one of the best sci-fi films of all time. It earned a place in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant," and in 2007 the Visual Effects Society named named it the "2nd most visually influential film of all time.
Scott, Broderick Johnson, Andrew Kosove, Bud Yorkin, and Cynthia Sikes are producing, with Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble executive producing.
Alcon's official press release reveals that the "filmmakers have not yet revealed whether the theatrical project will be a prequel or sequel to the renowned original."
Kosove and Johnson stated, "It would be a gross understatement to say that we are elated Ridley Scott will shepherd this iconic story into a new, exciting direction. We are huge fans of Ridley's and of the original Blade Runner. This is once in a lifetime project for us."
Scott's Prometheus, which started off as an Alien prequel, will be released on June 8, 2012.
