Sorry Constantine Maroulis fans, Rock of Ages director Adam Shankman has opted to go a different direction with the film adaptation and has cast Diego Boneta in the role of Drew Boley. Shankman decided to go with an actor closer to the character's age, though he hopes to have Maroulis do a cameo in the film.
In an interview with EW, director Shankman explained why Boneta's right for the role: "It's very difficult to say, but it's one of those instincts you have when you see somebody. I had the exact same thing about Nikki Blonsky in Hairspray. We had the same thing about Channing Tatum, Zac Efron. You say, 'Oh my god, it's them!' Because there's an It factor. There's an honesty about it that you can't see -- you can't put your finger on. It's just that they're behaving -- they're not acting like the character, they just are the character."
Drew is an "aspiring rocker, a talented singer/guitarist who's already working with a band. Immediately smitten by the lovely and naive, yet talented Sherrie, he's currently working behind the scenes at the legendary Bourbon Room, stoked when he finally gets a chance to open for a major star. Later, a mortified Drew is signed by a manager who insists on turning him into the next homogenized teeny bopper." [character description from the Rock of Ages casting call]
According to Shankman, Russell Brand, Amy Adams, and Paul Giamatti are all in negotiations to join Rock of Ages. Actors already committed to the project include Julianne Hough, Tom Cruise, Mary J Blige, and Alec Baldwin.
