After finishing up interviews with the cast of Priest at WonderCon, I chatted (informally, not an interview) with Screen Gems President Clint Culpepper about the film's conversion to 3D and about another one of the studio's upcoming huge projects: The Mortal Instruments. Culpepper said Priest's conversion to the format will have all the naysayers changing their minds, and even upped the budget to ensure the 3D version would look stunning and win over audiences. And, although I'm not a fan of 3D (the glasses are distracting and most 3D films are too dark), the extra time and money invested in Priest looks like it's paid off. Footage screened at WonderCon looked incredible, and it's impossible to tell the film wasn't shot in the format in the first place.
As for the timing of The Mortal Instruments, Lily Collins ('Clary') will be working on Snow White prior to filming The Mortal Instruments which does allow the studio and director Scott Stewart more time to either get Pettyfer signed on or find another actor to fill the pivotal role.

i think as long as the movie is amazingly done then good on collins for taking up another role before this project hopefully we can see how well her acting is and i for one am just ecstatic with the books being released!
Many people seem to like Alex, but it’s purley based on his looks, as he can not act at all. The reviews for the two movies that he has been in have such low ratings. Many fans will be furious if they decide to cast Alex as Jace, and I agree with the people above. This will just turn out like Twilight since the cast of twilight can’t act either, except for some rare people in the movie.
Jace faces a lot of emotional problems, and I highly doubt that Alex would be able to perform it well, and or convince the audience that what he is feeling is real.
Some fans may swoon at the sight of him, and they may be happy that he was cast, but once the movie is out…. This could be a total flop since book adaptations of movies havn’t been doing so well.
I really hope that they do not cast Alex, but i won’t be surprised if they do, even thought he has no acting skills what so ever.
Come on Alex!!! I have been your fan since 5th grade and I have always wanted you for City of Bones!!!! You would rock, and the film would not be as good without you!!! (And if you happen to read this, I thought you were awesome in Alex Rider!!)
And Elena, he has been in way more movies than just two. Some to mention, Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker, Tormented, Beastly, I Am Number Four, Wild Child, Tom Brown”s Schooldays, and I am now just hearing of a new film…..
Ash, she said the movies he has been in RECENTLY, and to be honest he is a s–t actor. Everyone knows it, they just don’t care cause he’s gorgeous! He was horrible in Beastly and he will be as Jace!

I don’t think that it’s a question of whether he’s a good actor or not. I think that he just hasn’t been given a role he can really show his skills in. He’s really just getting started so his earlier portrayals definitely won’t be top notch. I think he does have the base material though. I say: give him a chance.
So, if not Alex Pettyfer, then who should play Jace?
I don’t really like Alex as Jace he is not right for the part. But do think that Max Irons would be great. In Little Red Riding Hood he out shined the main characters and he has that Jace smirk thing going for him.

Alex Pettyfer is totally wrong for Jace!
Yeah, I suppose AP could get Jace’s snarkiness down. But I think he’d falter in trying to dislpay the other aspects of Jace – his toughness and torturedness.
Also, Jace is 17 and Alex Pettyfer looks way too old to play a 17 year old. The guy looks older than Ben Barnes, who is 30. Even though AP is younger than Max Irons, Max Irons looks more credible playing a teenager. Also, since the first three books take place right in succession, but the movies won’t be filmed that way, AP would look even more wrong for the part in movies 2 and 3 (and 4-6 if they continued).
Most importantly, Alex Pettyfer can’t act at all. And he hasn’t proven that he has that leading man charisma that attracts people to the box office (everything he’s headlined has underperformed). I know a lot of people find him attractive, but he really isn’t that great. He certainly isn’t good-looking enough to make up for his inability to act.
Max Irons would be a much, much better choice! He’s better looking, he has charisma, he looks closer to the character’s age AND he can act!!
OMG Max Irons has really proven himself as actor…hardly. He has had one movie and it was a bigger flop than anything Alex has done! The guy is beautiful no doubt, but I don’t understand this arguement that he is so much better for the role of Jace. We should let the professionals choose who Jace should be. I am a Mortal Instruments fan and will watch the movie regardless of who is chosen. People are really starting to sound like crazy Twi-Hards and that is scary!!
Sorry but I liked I Am Number Four and Alex did just fine in it. At least give him a chance, if he takes the part. So much will be in the adaptation/writing/story than anything else.
i think alex pettyfer suits the role of jace perfectly… i don’t want any jace aside from him… and i think he really has what it takes to be jace….
Alex is PERFECT for Jace. When I read the books Alex is exactly what I had pictured for Jace, and that was before I knew who Alex was!! Max Irons is NOT attractive enough to play Jace. Sorry to the Max fans, Im sure he is a great guy but I don’t find him all that attractive. When I picture Jace, he is almost like a god. Blond tan built.. has an attitude but has a sweet side! That is Alex! Come on Alex stop draggin your feet! This is the perfect part for you! Can’t wait for COFA!!!!
I’ve seen every movie Alex has done, and anyone who says he is a “sh-t actor” is full of it. I suppose that all of the directors who have given him lead role are so blinded by his beauty that they can’t properly judge his acting, is that it? Alex is the only person who I will ever accept as Jace, but I’m not sure if The Mortal Instruments are good enough for him.
I think Alex is perfect for Jace and not just because of his looks. He can play all the right traits (tough, sexy, confident, sarcastic, vulnerable) to bring Jace to life in a way that will please Mortal Instruments fans.
Elena, I am in TOTAL AGREEMENT with you. Alex Pettyfer is an okay actor, compared to a lot of actors out there. He does look like a potential Jace, as a matter of fact, when I think of Jace, I picture him. But this is a movie, not a model contest people. Alex Pettyfer looks like the perfect Jace, but he can’t pull of the acting. And the evidence for this is in all the movies he has previously acted in.
I really want Alex to be Jace I think Alex talked with the author too. I really hope this negotiation thing what ever works out and Alex will end u playing Jace.
If ALex didn’t play Jace I don’t think I would want to watch the movie and ruin the picture I have in my mind.

@amanda: you never say anything about alex’s acting skills during your entire tirade. do you even care about acting at all? or is looks the most important thing? first of all, this is a movie a not a modeling campaign where the most good looking one wins. even when you mention max irons, you talk about his looks, do you even notice acting or know what it is? sure we need someone attractive for jace but above all, we need a good ACTOR for jace. and it’s completely rude of you to say max irons is not “pretty enough. I’m sorry I didn’t know “mildly” attractive people aren’t allowed to play jace, I’ll remember that next time. grow up and realize that good looks are not everything, ACTING matters too
I’m very happy that screen gems is taking their time casting jace, glad that they didn’t rush into things right away. I love lily collins as clary so I hope I love their pick for jace too.

Zara and Jade: in all honesty, it IS a lot about looks. Jace in the book is supposed to be this gorgeous male lead, so I’m not sure why you’re bashing amanda about feeling Alex Pettyfer fits that so perfectly… I happen to think Alex is a great actor as well, which is why I couldn’t be more excited that he’s being offered it. He’s perfect for the role.
If you want to judge an actor without caring about his looks, don’t do it for a role where the looks are a huge part of the character.

Alex is prfect in every other way. I’ve sen all of hi movies and he is an excellent actor. People that say he’ not are just terrible critics. If he was really that bad, he wouldn’t get movie deals. So stfu. It IS about looks because that is what Jace prides himself in. Since before there was even supposed to be a movie I said that ONLY Alex Pettyfer could play Jace if they turn the books into movies because he has every trait neccessary. Any other actor, no offense to those other actors, would suck as jace. ONLY alex can accurately play jace. he has the right attitude (in his roles) and the right looks. tmi is my favorite book series and im ecstatic that theyre being turned into movies. i mean i love twilight but the mortal instruments makes twiight look loke sh-t. and yes, they coulda had better actors for twilight. kellan luts, jackson rathbone<3, ashley greene, peter facinelli, and a few others were the only good ones. im sorry im getting off topic. if alex isnt jace tmi will be just like twilight no matter who else is in the movie and even if it were to be just like the books. put it this way: if alex pettyfer does not play jace, i refuse to watch the mortal instruments movies and put that image f my favrite books in my mind. so yayyyyyyyy ALEX PETTYFER!!!!!!
I’m kind of in the middle for Alex playing Jace. Looks wise…I think he fits. The other actors I see trying out or interested really do not fit the way I saw him. At times alex looks way too hard and older, but other times he gets that look. The softish features. Compared to the others in looks I would say yes, but you also have to go with acting ability. I DO think alex can act, but he hasn’t found his role that brings in his spark (lol) I know I sound weird, but I think that if he’s given a chance and reads REALLY WELL with Collins, he’ll do great, and I won’t have to skip out on the movie, like i wanted to do for twilight (so disappointed with how it was written, acted, and directed)I don’t just like him for the part because he’s hot. I think he’ll do well. I liked him in his other movies. I just feel the parts he’s been in haven’t went well with him. I think he has a bit of Jace in him. Something that will make it more real.
