Not only is a sequel to the as-yet-unreleased The Amazing Spider-Man moving forward, it has James Vanderbilt in place to write the script. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony and Amazing Spider-Man writer Vanderbilt are re-teaming on the sequel. Vanderbilt laid out his idea for the next film for the studio execs and got the greenlight to go ahead with a script.
The Amazing Spider-Man reboots the series, with Andrew Garfield taking over webslinger duties from Tobey Maguire. Emma Stone co-stars as Gwen Stacy, Rhys Ifans is The Lizard, and Sally Field and Martin Sheen play May and Ben Parker. 500 Days of Summer's Marc Webb (I still get a kick out of 'Webb' being the director of a Spidey movie, even after all these months of reporting on the film) helms the project which hasn't yet wrapped up shooting.
Vanderbilt's previous writing credits include The Losers and Zodiac.
Columbia Pictures will launch The Amazing Spider-Man in theaters on July 3, 2012.
