CinemaCon, the annual gathering of motion picture industry professionals (formerly known as ShoWest), has selected Oscar winner Helen Mirren as the recipient of this year's CinemaCon Career Achievement Award. Making the announcement, CinemaCon Managing Director Mitch Neuhauser said, "A consummate actress, Helen Mirren has entertained audiences around the globe for over four decades with her stunning performances on the big screen. With an incredible diversity in role selection, Mirren has graced the screen in such memorable movies as The Queen, The Last Station, and The Madness of King George, and, more recently, in 2010's summer action hit Red, to name just a few. We can't wait to see what Helen has in store in her comedic turn in Arthur. CinemaCon could not be more honored to present such an amazing actress with the CinemaCon Career Achievement Award."
Past lifetime achievement award winners include Michael Caine, Steven Spielberg, Sean Connery, Sophia Loren, and Kirk Douglas.
CinemaCon is also honoring Lionsgate's Conan the Barbarian star Jason Momoa and Julianne Hough from the upcoming remake of Footloose with CinemaCon Rising Star of 2011 Awards. Commenting on Momoa's selection, Lionsgate's Joe Drake stated, "Jason is the definition of a rising star. He will absolutely be the next unstoppable male action hero, and we are so proud that it will be because of this film."
Hough earned a large fan following after appearing on the hit TV series Dancing with the Stars and she'll next be seen playing 'Ariel' in the new take on the 1984 movie, Footloose. In the '84 film, Kevin Bacon starred as a newcomer to a small town who finds it tough to fit in once he learns dancing has been banned. Filling Bacon's role in the 2011 edition is Kenny Wormald, with Dennis Quaid stepping into the shoes of John Lithgow to play Hough's minister father who's instrumental in implementing the laws against dancing and loud music.Last year, Beastly stars Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens picked up the 'Star of Tomorrow' awards. In 2009 it was Chris Pine (Star Trek) and the cast of Sorority Row who earned the equivalent of this year's Rising Star awards.
All of the awards will be handed out at the CinemaCon Big Screen Achievement Award Ceremony taking place on March 31st in The Colosseum of Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada.
