Being a huge fan of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang I'm rooting for Shane Black to sign on to direct Iron Man 3 which would reunite the director with his Kiss Kiss star Robert Downey Jr. Jon Favreau's moved on and won't be at the helm of the third film of the franchise, and Variety reports Black is "closing in on a deal" to direct Iron Man 3 while Deadline takes it a step further and says Black is in final negotiations.
The first Iron Man was released on May 2, 2008 and made $102 million domestically and $570 million worldwide before exiting theaters. Iron Man 2 followed in May 2010, opening with $128 million and going on to collect $617 million worldwide. Disney's targeting a May 3, 2013 release date for Iron Man 3 (The Avengers is aiming for a May 2012 release).Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is the only film Black's directed thus far, although he is attached to direct Death Note for Warner Bros and Doc Savage for Columbia Pictures. And if he does commit to Iron Man 3, it's not known if he'll take a crack at the script. Black's no stranger to action films having written the screenplays for Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero, and The Long Kiss Goodnight, so it's logical to assume he'll want to work on Iron Man 3's script. Now if only he could find a way to work in roles for Val Kilmer and Michelle Monaghan...
