This deal's been rumored to be in the works for months, but now The Hollywood Reporter says Tom Cruise has made it to the final negotiations stage. THR says Cruise will join Rock of Ages, playing the character Jaxx (which will mean something if you've seen the stage play). Adam Shankman (Hairspray) is set to direct, and filming will begin this May.Set up at New Line, Rock of Ages is set in the 1980s and is filled with rock music from that decade. The story follows a young rocker eager for a break and a small town girl in Hollywood chasing her dreams.
Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin are also reportedly considering joining the cast. It was rumored Seth Rogen would be involved, but at the Green Hornet premiere he shot that bit of casting news down. When asked if he was going to do the film, Rogen replied, "No, I can't sing. I wish I could. If I could sing, I would be doing it."
And back in December Gwyneth Paltrow expressed an interest in the project. At the premiere of Country Strong she told EW that she had just received the script and was preparing to read it on the plane ride home. "But it sounds like it could be fun," said Paltrow. However, Paltrow hasn't commented recently on the possibility of joining Rock of Ages.
