Henry Cavill photoDirector Zack Snyder has found his Superman - and he's not who you expected him to be. After months and months of speculation and rumors, 27 year old Henry Cavill has landed the sought after lead role in the new Superman film (which may be called Superman: The Man of Steel...or not).

In a press release issued by Warner Bros announcing Cavill's casting, director Snyder stated, "In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield."

Actors who were, over the course of the last few months, rumored to be on Snyder's radar to play the Man of Steel included True Blood's Joe Manganiello, The Social Network's Armie Hammer, The Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder, and Watchmen's Matthew Goode.

Cavill's past credits include I Capture the Castle, Tristan & Isolde, Stardust, Whatever Works, and the Showtime series The Tudors. Upcoming films include the action thriller The Cold Light of Day, with Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver, and Tarsem Singh's Immortals.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are producing the new Superman film. David S. Goyer wrote the screenplay. Warner Bros is aiming for a December 2012 release.

What a stupid choice, I have been a Superman fan since I was 8yo and still am an avid collerctor of comics and supoorter of all things Superman. I will not even see this movie is this guy is cast. Superman he is not. Why do they get these directors who are not loyal fans of the current comics to do the movies? Hello, someone like Colin O’Donahue would have been an obvious choice. Morons.

He’s got to better than Routh, right? At least he’s not a midget, at 6′ 1″. Let’s hope he has worked out and looks the part in costume. I think his heart is in because he supposedly tried out for Superman Returns and Batman Begins.

Unbelievable, another idiot who knows nothing about superman. Tom Welling. would have been the viewers choice.
