Page Six is reporting screenwriter Nicolas Constantine and Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell have obtained the rights to The Night Stalker, a biography of serial killer Richard Ramirez written by Phillip Carlo, and are making plans to bring it to the big screen. Co-producers Constantine and Cornell have apparently picked James Franco (127 Hours) to star in and direct the feature film version of Ramirez' twisted life.According to Page Six, production is expected to get underway this summer with Franco making his feature film directorial debut with The Night Stalker.
Constantine told Page Six, "I had no idea if he would do it, though, since it's pretty dark subject matter. They told me he was studying to be a director and this was perfect for him. We watched three short films he made, two of which were dark and one of which was about a serial killer. That confirmed James definitely had this dark side, and it definitely sealed the deal for us. Sure enough, James read the material and responded to it immediately."
Since wrapping up work on 127 Hours (which will likely earn him an Oscar nomination), Franco's finished shooting Rise of the Apes, is currently filming Maladies, has another film he's supposed to be directing (The Broken Tower) in the works, and signed up to host the Academy Awards with Anne Hathaway. And he's also going to college. He'll next be seen on screen in the comedy Your Highness alongside another potential Oscar nominee, Natalie Portman (Black Swan).
