Oscar-nominated British actor Pete Postlethwaite passed away on January 2 after a long battle with cancer. Andrew Richardson (a journalist and close friend of Postlethwaite) made the sad announcement to the UK media, saying that the critically acclaimed actor passed away peacefully in a hospital in Shropshire.Postlethwaite made two films with Daniel Day-Lewis (Last of the Mohicans, In the Name of the Father), earning a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Day-Lewis' father in In the Name of the Father. Other notable film credits include The Usual Suspects, Brassed Off, The Shipping News, The Constant Gardener, The Age of Stupid, and 2010's Inception, Clash of the Titans, and The Town.
Postlethwaite did two movies with Steven Spielberg (Amistad, The Lost World: Jurassic Park) which prompted the filmmaker to call him "probably the best actor in the world today." The Independent reports Postlethwaite responded to the compliment by saying, "I'm sure what Spielberg actually said was, 'the thing about Pete is that he thinks he's the best actor in the world'."
Postlethwaite is survived by his wife, Jacqui, and two children. Our thoughts go out to his fans, friends and family. He will be greatly missed.
