DreamWorks Pictures announced Steven Spielberg will direct the futuristic action thriller Robopocalypse based on the as-yet-unpublished book by Daniel H Wilson and adapted for the screen by Drew Goddard (Cloverfield). Filming's expected to begin on the project in January 2012 with Disney's Touchstone aiming for a 2013 release.Wilson's book will be released by Doubleday in June 2011.
In a press release announcing Spielberg as director, DreamWorks Studios President of Production Mark Sourian said, "Robopocalypse embodies an imaginative story of a robot rebellion unleashed against the human race. This is a project we immediately sparked to and with Steven directing it we knew it was in the best possible hands to bring it to worldwide audiences."
Spielberg is currently in post-production on The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn starring Daniel Craig and Jamie Bell and produced by Peter Jackson. He's also busy with the adventure film War Horse based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo. Both films will be competing for the attention of moviegoers in late December 2011.
