Anderson Cooper led the charge, GLAAD picked up the cause, and now Universal Pictures has conceded the reference to smart cars being gay in the trailer for The Dilemma might not have been such a smart idea. The line at the center of the controversy: "Electric cars are gay. I mean not homosexual gay, but, you know, my-parents-are-chaperoning-the-dance gay."Directed by Ron Howard, The Dilemma finds Vince Vaughn discovering that his best friend's wife (played by Winona Ryder) is cheating on him with a younger, hunky stud (played by Channing Tatum). Should he tell his friend (played by Kevin James) or keep the info to himself - that's the dilemma of The Dilemma.
Anderson Cooper first expressed his opinion about the line on Ellen Degeneres' show. Cooper was on the show discussing bullying when he told Degeneres he was shocked by the gay line in the trailer (he didn't mention the film's name). "I just find those words, those terms - we've got to do something to make those words unacceptable 'cause those words are hurting kids," said Cooper. GLAAD followed up and issued a press release stating they've addressed the issue with Universal Pictures and Universal's opted to remove the line from all marketing campaigns and the film's trailer. "Regardless of the intention, hearing words like 'gay', 'f-g', and 'd-ke' consistently used as insults is a hard thing for LGBT people to take, particularly for LGBT youth who must endure such language daily at school. As recent events have shown, the consequences can be devastating."
The Dilemma hits theaters on January 14, 2011.
