George Clooney's next project as a director, Farragut North, may have found its star in Ryan Gosling. According to Deadline, Clooney is in negotiations with Gosling to take on the role which was, at one point, going to be played by Leonardo DiCaprio. The feature film is based on the stage play Farragut North, written by Beau Willimon, which made its Broadway debut in 2008. Willimon's play was inspired by his experiences working on Howard Dean's campaign during his run for the presidency in 2004. The Theatre Communications Group offers this synopsis of the play: "Stephen is a wunderkind press secretary who has built a career that men twice his age would envy. During a tight presidential primary race, however, Stephen's meteoric rise falls prey to the backroom politics of more seasoned operatives, and his one night stand with a teenage staffer proves to be more complicated than casual."
Other actors rumored to be involved in Farragut North are Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Evan Rachel Wood, and Marisa Tomei. Chris Pine (Star Trek, the upcoming Unstoppable) starred in the West Coast production of the play during the summer of 2009 and was reported to have been on Clooney's radar to topline the film version.
Production on Farragut North is expected to begin early next year.
Gosling will next be seen in Blue Valentine (which is getting some Oscar buzz) and recently completed work on All Good Things and Crazy, Stupid, Love. He's currently filming Drive with Carey Mulligan and Christina Hendricks.
