James McAvoy has landed the role of the young Charles Xavier (aka Professor X) in 20th Century Fox's X-Men: First Class. The part was played by Patrick Stewart in the previous X-Men films. Looks obviously did not play a part in the casting decision. Stewart and McAvoy don't look anything like each other, however McAvoy's definitely got the acting chops to handle the key role in the 2011 film. The film will be shot this summer in England with Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn at the helm. This prequel "charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men."
X-Men: First Class hits theaters on June 3, 2011.
McAvoy recently completely work on Robert Redford's The Conspirator, the story of the only female conspirator charged in President Lincoln's assassination. He also lent his voice to the animated family film Gnomeo and Juliet coming to theaters in early 2011.
