Ridley Scott's heading to Cannes with latest action epic. The 72 year old British filmmaker's new movie, Robin Hood, has been named the opening night film for the 63rd Festival de Cannes. Robin Hood will be screened on May 12th, the day before it's released in France and just two days before it opens in the U.S. and the U.K.

This version of Robin Hood's story didn't always focus on Robin Hood. When the script was originally snatched up by Universal, it was called Nottingham and it took an entirely different approach to telling the classic tale. Writers Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris examined the story from the Sheriff of Nottingham's point of view - and he was the good guy. But that plot line was eventually scrapped, and Reiff and Voris' script was reworked to shift the focus back to Robin Hood as the film's hero.

The tale of the man who steals from the rich to give to the poor marks the fifth collaboration between director Scott and actor Crowe. The two previously worked together on Gladiator (2000), A Good Year (2006), American Gangster (2007), and Body of Lies (2008). Of the five, Robin Hood has the biggest budget at an estimated $120-130 million.

Robin Hood was produced by Brian Grazer, Ridley Scott, and Russell Crowe, and also features Cate Blanchett, Mark Strong, Danny Huston, Max Von Sydow, William Hurt, and Mark Addy.
