Joe Johnston Captain America Exclusive Interview

By February 10, 2010

Follow me on:

The Wolfman director Joe Johnston's next big project is The First Avenger: Captain America, and while Johnston isn't saying much about what's happening with the superhero film, that hasn't stopped anyone (myself included) from trying to squeeze out a little info from the Oscar winner (1982's Best Effects, Visual Effects winner for Raiders of the Lost Ark). Johnston knows how to handle action and he's done big budget films before (Jumanji, Jurassic Park III), but Captain America is in a whole other league when it comes to a having an active, outspoken fan base analyzing and examining every little tidbit of news. And I found it quite interesting - and maybe just coincidental - that Ryan McPartlin (Chuck), one of the actors rumored to have read for the lead role in Captain America, was at the premiere of The Wolfman...

In our exclusive interview on the red carpet at the American premiere of The Wolfman held on Feb. 9th, Johnston had this to say about Captain America:
Can I ask one Captain America question?

Joe Johnston: "You can ask all the Captain America questions you want, but I'm sworn to secrecy. I'm sworn to secrecy."

So you're not going to tell me who you cast.

Joe Johnston: "We haven't cast anyone."

You have to soon though, right?

Joe Johnston: "Yeah, soon, we will. I promise you we will. We got a new draft of the script last night and it's fantastic. Even I want to see this movie."

How did it change from the first one? What makes it better?

Joe Johnston: "Better, tighter, a little more action, more character stuff, a subplot that - I don't want to say anymore. But it is great."

Is it an origin story?

Joe Johnston: "It is the origin story. That's all I'm going to say."

So if I don't know anything about Captain America, I'm going to understand this film?

Joe Johnston: "Absolutely."

And you are going after somebody that we don't really know?

Joe Johnston: "I don't know. I don't know. I'm not going to say. I'm sworn to secrecy."

It's not going to be an R.

Joe Johnston: "No, PG-13, like all those Marvel movies."

Days earlier at the LA press conference for The Wolfman Johnston revealed what his approach will be to shooting Captain America: "We're definitely going to shoot it in a different way than any of the other Marvel pictures have been shot. What I'm trying to do is look at the comics, mostly the new ones, mostly the Brubaker series, and to interpret that sort of visual style into a film in a way that I think has been tried before but it always looks like it's a little too on the nose. It looks like, 'Oh, they're shooting a comic book movie.' I want to try something a little bit different."

Marvel's aiming for a July 22, 2012 release of The First Avenger: Captain America.
