At the American premiere of Universal Pictures' The Wolfman, screenwriter David Self did his absolute best to not reveal any details about the upcoming - maybe 2011? - Robocop. After talking to Self, I think it would be safe to say you can trust him with just about any secret. Here are the brief bits of info he dropped in our exclusive red carpet interview:Are you still involved with Robocop?Told you he is good at keeping secrets. Way back when Darren Aronofsky was promoting The Wrestler in November 2008, he told me in our exclusive interview that the new Robocop is not a remake or a re-imagining, and that the storyline won't be related to the past films at all. Still, a new take on Robocop sounds interesting - if it does ever actually move forward.David Self: "Yeah. I mean we're hoping MGM becomes... We're waiting for resolution with MGM's sort of larger situation so we can continue on with that. But yes, I'm still involved in it."
Have you written the script for it yet or is it still just in the planning stage?
David Self: "We have an initial script that we're making revisions on. Darren [Aronofsky's] making another movie right now. We're waiting for MGM to sort of sort themselves out, and then we'll be back to work."
How's it going to compare to the past Robocops?David Self: "I don't want to give away too many secrets right now, but it's going to have a lot of surprises."
Is it going to be one of those things where you need to know the universe first, or is this going to re-introduce it?David Self: "No, I think we are re-introducing the universe but I think we're respecting the originals in a lot of ways. I mean I'm not sure we can compete with [Paul] Verhoeven's sense of humor, but we're going to do our best."
