George Clooney is a very, very busy man. In addition to promoting two films that are generating huge buzz - Up in the Air and The Men Who Stare at Goats - Clooney's just begun work on The American for director Anton Corbijn (Control). Focus Features announced production has begun in Italy on the suspense thriller adapted by Rowan Joffe from Martin Booth's A Very Private Gentleman novel.

Focus CEO James Schamus called the teaming of Corbijn and Clooney a "movie marriage made in heaven."

The Official The American Synopsis:
Alone among assassins, Jack (Clooney) is a master craftsman. When a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, he vows to his contact Larry (Bruce Altman) that his next assignment will be his last. Jack reports to the Italian countryside, where he holes up in a small town and relishes being away from death for a spell. The assignment, as specified by a Belgian woman, Mathilde (Thekla Reuten), is in the offing as a weapon is constructed. Surprising himself, Jack seeks out the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) and pursues romance with local woman Clara (Violante Placido). But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.

George Clooney has the finesse of Cary Grant. He is the closest thing we have today of a modern day Cary Grant. I love his swagger, his sex appeal, his witty sense of humor, his ability to converse on any topic from politics to spirituality, his heart of gold, his spirit of adventure both in and out of bed, the fact that he loves MOTORCYCLES is a plus, plus, plus, his practicality, his voice, his bedroom eyes and most of all, his million dollar smile. He is the real deal, whether the public chooses to believe it or not. I like the fact that he doesn’t pull any punches about the marriage issue. George…stay single. Preserve your sanity and happiness!!!! Love you always….be good….

The American was the worst movie ive seen in years.
After it ended I said in a fairly loud voice if anyone knew what the movie was about and people all around me said
No!
Everybody just sat there and hoped that the movie would make sense at the end.
George should be ashamed that he stared in and put up his money to produce this piece of crap
It showed clooney being old and haggard looking getting it on with chicks half his age.Come on George give us something good to make up for the 8 dollars I wasted on The American!

This movie is not what I call “entertainment” at any level. I felt like I was in as much misery as the character watching it.
