Joseph O'Neill's bestselling novel Netherland is heading to the big screen with Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Films and Sam Mendes' Neal Street Productions producing. Christopher Hampton (Atonement) has been brought in to adapt O'Neill's book and Sam Mendes is considering directing. Mendes' two latest directorial projects, Away We Go and Revolutionary Road, met with mixed results and failed to do much business at the box office.

Erin Collazo Miller, About.com's Guide to Bestsellers, awarded Netherland four out of five stars, calling it "a novel of reverie that is as grounded in reality as New York itself." The story takes place in NYC and involves a lonely man who finds comfort and friendship after joining a cricket league.

In a press release announcing the upcoming film, Focus CEO James Schamus said, "We're so glad to have Christopher join our creative partnership with Harpo and Neal Street, rendering an extraordinary gathering of talents even more so. This project's emotional power has resonated with us all."

There's no word yet on casting or when production will start.
