Warner Bros Creates DC Entertainment

Thursday September 10, 2009
Warner Bros has made a move which means we could be seeing many, many more movies based on DC Comics characters. Warner Premiere President Diane Nelson has been appointed as president of the newly created DC Entertainment, a company launched to "fully realize the power and value of the DC Comics brand and characters across all media and platforms," according to WB's press release. Nelson has 20+ years of experience in brand management and marketing, and has been guiding the hugely successful Harry Potter film franchise for the studio, something she'll continue to do as the series finishes up with the 2-part Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

President & Publisher of DC Comics Paul Levitz is leaving that post and will serve as a writer, contributing editor and consultant to DC Entertainment.

Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO of Warner Bros, stated, "DC Comics and its super hero characters are truly touchstones of popular culture, and the formation of DC Entertainment is a major step in our company’s efforts to realize the full potential of this incredible wellspring of creative properties. Diane knows our studio as a creative executive, a marketer and a senior manager, and this varied background will help her effectively and creatively integrate the DC brand and properties across all our businesses. We’re also thrilled that Paul will remain involved with DC and we’ll be able to tap his expertise to help us reach our goals for this new business.”

“Based on the great success we’ve had working with DC Comics to create some of the most popular and successful super hero films of all time, I’ve long believed that there was much more we could do across all of Warner Bros.' businesses with this great body of characters and stories,” said Jeff Robinov, President of Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “The prioritization of DC and the creation of DC Entertainment is a great opportunity that reaches far beyond the film group."

DC properties currently in development/production include Jonah Hex starring Josh Brolin, The Losers with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Chris Evans, The Green Lantern with Ryan Reynolds in the lead role, and Lobo which will be directed by Guy Ritchie.

The creation of DC Entertainment leaves the status of a few films in question. At the premiere of Warner Bros and Dark Castle Entertainment's Whiteout, I asked producer Joel Silver if this will impact Wonder Woman. "Maybe. It might. But DC is now going to structure everything differently," said Silver. "We're still making The Losers right now, which is a DC title. And then we're going to make Lobo, which is a DC title. And, you know, I still have Sgt. Rock. But they're going to bring it all together and I don't know what's going to happen to Wonder Woman. It's going to be in the mix there so we'll see what happens."
