Variety's reporting two-time Oscar nominated director Stephen Frears (The Queen, The Grifters) is set to helm a live-action film based on Posy Simmonds' graphic novel Tamara Drewe. And not only is Frears now onboard, the Tamara Drewe film is quickly gathering an impressive cast. Gemma Arterton, who just finished work on two huge studio films - Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - will take on the title role. Roger Allam (V for Vendetta, The Queen) and Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia!) have also signed on to the project.Simmonds' Tamara Drewe was loosely inspired by Thomas Hardy's Far From the Maddening Crowd and was first published as a series of comic strips in The Guardian. Simmonds' story followed the exploits of a beautiful gossip columnist who stirs up trouble at a rural writers' retreat.
Moira Buffini adapted Simmonds' Tamara Drewe for the screen. Filming is expected to begin this month at Pinewood Studios.
