The director who made chihuahuas talk and a great big animated dog rescue his human buddies has been given the job of directing a Smurfs movie by Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation. Frankly, I'd like to see a totally live action Smurfs feature film - I don't know why exactly as it would probably be pretty freaky looking - but this Smurfs will be a mix of live-action and animation. It'll also be in 3-D, which isn't surprising as every movie in production seems to coming out in that format. Yes, I know that's an exaggeration.Commenting on the signing of Gosnell as director, Smurfs producer Jordan Kerner said, "With Raja coming aboard, we now have a brilliant director who has proven time and again that he has a deft touch in blending the worlds of physical comedy and honest emotion with both live action and photo real animated characters. Our three-apple-high heroes are in good hands, and we feel absolutely, positively Smurfy to be working with him."
Columbia and Sony Pictures Animation are aiming for a December 17, 2010 release. J David Stem, David N Weiss and Audrey Wells are writing the script. Gosnell's credits include Home Alone 3, Never Been Kissed, Big Momma's House, both Scooby-Doo movies, and Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
