Andrew Stanton's first live-action directing gig, John Carter of Mars, is coming together after what seems like years in the works. Actually, it doesn't just seem like we've been talking about this particular project for years, it has been in development for years. Stanton (writer/director of Finding Nemo and WALL-E) and Disney have finally selected the film's main leads, and two Wolverine veterans have landed the coveted roles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Taylor Kitsch ('Gambit' in X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Lynn Collins ('Kayla Silverfox' in Wolverine) have been cast in Disney's John Carter of Mars, with filming now expected to begin later this year or early 2010.Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' stories, John Carter of Mars follows the adventures of John Carter (Kitsch), a Civil War veteran who's transported to Mars. There he must join with Dejah Thoris (Collins) to secure his freedom and save the planet. Stanton will be directing from a script he co-wrote with Mark Andrews.
Taylor Kitsch's credits include a starring role on the Friday Night Lights TV series as well as roles in the movies John Tucker Must Die, Snakes on a Plane, and The Covenant. Kitsch recently completed work on The Bang Bang Club with Malin Akerman and Ryan Phillippe.
Lynn Collins has been keeping busy playing a sexy waitress named Dawn, an unfortunate character who didn't make it through the first season of HBO's vampire series, True Blood. Collins' film credits include The Merchant of Venice, The Number 23, and Towelhead (directed by True Blood creator/executive producer/writer/director Alan Ball).
