Sofia Coppola Directs Somewhere

By April 19, 2009

Follow me on:

Sofia Coppola is reuniting with Focus Features - the studio behind Lost in Translation - for her next project, Somewhere. Coppola wrote the screenplay, is producing the film, and is set to direct the Hollywood-ish story about a bad boy actor living the high life at the Chateau Marmont Hotel in Hollywood. A visit from his 11 year old daughter forces him to confront his problems. Stephen Dorff will play the actor with Elle Fanning signed on as the daughter.

Somewhere is Coppola's fourth feature film as director. Coppola wrote and directed 1999's The Virgin Suicides starring Kirsten Dunst and Josh Hartnett and 2003's Lost in Translation with Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. Coppola made her way into the Oscar history books as only the third woman to pick up a nomination in the best director category for her work on Lost in Translation. Coppola ultimately lost out to director Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King), but won in the Best Original Screenplay category. She also directed 2006's Marie Antoinette starring Dunst and Jason Schwartzman (Coppola's cousin).

Somewhere will begin filming this summer in Los Angeles and Italy.
