Filming Begins on Salt Starring Angelina Jolie

Tuesday March 3, 2009
Columbia Pictures announced that principal photography will begin this week on the spy thriller Salt starring Angelina Jolie (Changeling) and Liev Schreiber. Salt's helmed by Phillip Noyce (Catch a Fire) who is reuniting with Jolie - one of the stars of The Bone Collector which he directed in 1999 - for this action film based on an original screenplay by Kurt Wimmer (The Recruit) rewritten by Brian Helgeland (Mystic River). Filming is expected to take place in Washington, DC and New York.

According to Columbia Pictures, Jolie stars as CIA officer Evelyn Salt who's "accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy. Salt goes on the run to clear her name and ultimately prove she is a patriot. Using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative, she must elude capture and protect her husband or the world's most powerful forces will erase any trace of her existence."

Schreiber, who'll next be seen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, is onboard to play Winter, Salt's boss and friend at the CIA. Chiwetel Ejiofor will co-star as a counter-intelligence officer named Peabody.

In a press release announcing the start of filming, director Noyce said, "It's great to be working with Angelina once again. She's the only one who could bring this character to life. Salt will be tense and exciting, everything that thriller audiences expect, but also with a strong, multi-dimensional character at the center."
