If you're in Chicago during the week of February 13 - 22, you might want to make a point of stopping by The Shops at North Bridge on Michigan Ave. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences is taking their Oscar show on the road, allowing Chicagoans to snap a photo holding an actual Oscar statuette at the free event. The 'Meet the Oscars, Chicago' display will also feature Oscars in various stages of development as well as Clark Gable's It Happened One Night (1934) Oscar statuette. In an interesting bit of trivia, Gable's Oscar was put up for auction in 1996. The winning bid was an incredible $607,000. The Academy later found out, once the Oscar was returned to their custody following the auction, that filmmaker Steven Spielberg was the buyer.Screen Actors Guild Updates
The upcoming Screen Actors Guild Award show on January 25th is going green. SAG officials have opted for an environmentally friendly show this year, focusing on recycling, composting and using reusable materials in order to achieve their goal of a zero waste event. SAG's reusing the awards stage, draperies, flooring, and red carpet, and they're donating all excess food to charities. They've also cut down on printing and are using recycled paper products whenever possible. Nice. And for those into statuettes, the 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards statuettes are apparently ready to go home with this year's winners. The 12 pound, 16" tall statuettes were cast in sold bronze at the American Fine Arts Foundry in Burbank, CA with each statuette featuring a serial number on its base. To date, 548 statuettes have been handed out since they first started being presented in 1995.
The Fresh and the Splats in the World of Rotten Tomatoes
Pixar pulled off another win when WALL-E was named the Wide Release Film of the Year at the 10th Annual Golden Tomato Awards (don't worry, you didn't miss an awards show - they don't have one). The robot love story was the best reviewed film of the year based on the critics who contribute ratings to Rotten Tomatoes. The tale of a man who walked between the Twin Towers, Man on Wire, took home the Limited Release Film of the Year award. And on the opposite end of the spectrum, One Missed Call had the dubious distinction of being named the Moldy Tomato Award winner as the worst reviewed film of the year. One Missed Call is now in the Moldy Tomato record books as the only film to achieve a perfect 0% rating - not a single critic gave it a positive review. Other films earning Golden Tomato Awards in specific categories include:Action / Adventure - The Dark Knight
Animation - Wall-E
Comedy - Happy-Go-Lucky
Horror - Teeth
Sci-Fi / Fantasy - Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Musical - High School Musical 3: Senior Year
Drama - The Wrestler
Thriller - Transsiberian
