Even the Foreign Press Love Slumdog Millionaire
Sunday January 11, 2009
Slumdog Millionaire is emerging as the film to beat after adding a batch more trophies (four, to be exact) to its shelf. Also coming away a big winner was Kate Winslet who nabbed two, count 'em, two, Golden Globes. Winslet earned the Best Supporting Actress award for her work in The Reader (which I still insist is in no way a 'supporting' role) and an Best Actress trophy for reuniting with her Titanic co-star for Revolutionary Road. And of course the night was all about awards, but it was also about fashion (mostly good this year) and awkward moments caught on camera. Amy Adams looked like a deer caught in the headlights when the camera panned the audience as the first honor of the night was being announced. The audience was making so much noise during the opening awards presentation J-Lo, wearing her usual almost not there dress cut down way, way low to show off her own golden globes, had to shush everyone. It was a weird way to start off the event, but also kind of par for the course when it comes to the Golden Globes. The Globes go on each year without a host to keep things under control, and even the second presentators of the night, Simon Baker and Eva Longoria, had to talk over the hubbub.

I’m happy for Kate. Really, I am. But let’s not pretend that those two Golden Globes were anything other than “make up” awards for previous snubs. Her performance in Revolutionary Road was fine, but wasn’t THAT big of a departure from what she did in Little Children (but then again, I’m shaking the pom-poms for Kristin Scott Thomas so what do I know?) and the film itself was a huge disappointment. And boy, are you right about The Reader! Are we so desperate to give this woman an award that we’re willing to keep lying to ourselves about the obvious fact that Kate Winslet was the lead in that film? It’ll be sad to see her nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar on January 22nd over more worthy supporting performances from Samantha Morton and Rosemary DeWitt.
Alas, I haven’t yet able to see either of Ms. Winslet’s performances, so I can’t really comment, but I am with Robert on Kristin Scott Thomas, who totally blew me away.
It’s always true of the Globes that I can’t possibly have seen all the movies, so I don’t feel I can make an informed judgment of who to root for. But I really didn’t have many quibbles this time around.
As far as fashion goes, I thought it was mostly fine except for some excessive “shoulder stuff”, but my husband detected a “chess piece” motif in the outlines that some of the women’s dresses and hair created which had me rolling.
