The Oscar race is heating up as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has narrowed the field of potential winners in two categories. Only seven films have made it this far in the process in the Makeup category:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
The Reader
Synecdoche, New York
Tropic Thunder
The Wrestler

The members of the Academy's Makeup Branch will view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven films on January 17th. The result of their vote will narrow the field to just three films. Those three will then make the final Oscar ballot mailed to Academy members.

On January 15 the Visual Effects Branch of the Academy will check out 15-minute excerpts from the seven films eligible for the Visual Effects Oscar. The top three films from that vote will be the Visual Effects Oscar nominees. The seven films to make the shortlist in the Visual Effects category are:

Australia
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Iron Man
Journey to the Center of the Earth
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

The nominees for the 81st Academy Awards will be revealed on January 22, 2009. The Oscars take place on Sunday, February 22, 2009, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood.
