Comic Con '08 - Day Two
Saturday July 26, 2008
Movie-wise the second day of the 2008 San Diego Comic Con was nowhere near as hectic as the first. But that doesn't mean Comic Con's Friday audience was left out of the action. Warner Bros Pictures and Universal Pictures both put on shows that had the audience howling (pardon the wolf pun) with pleasure.
If Warner Bros had any question about who's watching the Watchmen, the answer was made crystal clear. If the standing room only crowd was in any way indicative, then the answer is EVERYBODY. The Fire Marshall had to halt the line, leaving thousands of disappointed Watchmen fans without a seat for one of the biggest draws of this year's event. The entire main cast from the film took to the stage along with director Zack Snyder (300) and the graphic novel's illustrator, Dave Gibbons, and the audience let them know in no uncertain terms they approved of the teaser trailer which hit theaters in front of The Dark Knight. Gibbons has given his stamp of approval to Snyder's vision, and the Comic Con crowd understands the importance of Gibbons' support. And when Snyder showed off a batch of incredible new clips from Watchmen, the crowd went absolutely wild.
When it was time for Universal Pictures' Friday presentation, they sprang the second big surprise of Comic Con (the first being Hugh Jackman's appearance to promote X-Men Origins: Wolverine). Rick Baker was on hand to talk about the makeup design for The Wolfman and, as a special treat for the faithful, Benicio Del Toro and Emily Blunt joined him onstage to take questions and show off the film's amazing trailer. Del Toro, who rightfully credits Baker with helping to bring the creature to life, looked a little stunned by the massive crowd. It appears even Oscar-winners can be overwhelmed by the kind of response Comic Con fans can deliver.
