A Wrap-Up of the Golden Globes

Tuesday January 16, 2007
Is it just me or was this year's Golden Globes ceremony one of the most boring award shows in recent years? An hour and a half into the broadcast I almost switched to 24 - despite the fact movies are pretty much my life. But Cameron Diaz' dress was so jarring it woke me up out of my stupor and I was able to stick with the show, despite its torturously slow pacing.

There were a few memorable moments from the 2007 Golden Globes, most of which only stood out because the rest of the show was such a yawnfest. Here's a handful of the best:
  • The first presenter of the night, George Clooney, joked that multiple Golden Globe nominee Leonardo DiCaprio won the award for Best Supporting Actress. Of course last year it was Clooney who was the butt of the same sort of jokes at the Oscars.

  • Justin Timberlake squatted to make himself Prince's height while he accepted the award for the singer/songwriter who was late to the event. Later during the show Hugh Grant asked the tardy Prince to stand up so the audience could applaud his win.

  • Clint Eastwood lifted a line from Dreamgirls star Jennifer Hudson's acceptance speech. Eastwood picked up on Hudson's line, "You don't know what this does for my confidence," and got a good chuckle from the audience.

  • Accepting the Best Actor award for work in Borat, Sacha Baron Cohen just went for it in his acceptance speech. Thanking his co-star Ken Davitian, Cohen said, "When I was in that scene and I stared down and saw your two wrinkled Golden Globes on my chin, I thought to myself, 'I better win a bloody award for this.' And then when my 300-pound co-star decided to sit on my face and squeeze the oxygen from my lungs, I was faced with a choice - death or to breathe in the air that had been trapped in a small pocket between his buttocks for 30 years. Kenneth, if it was not for that rancid bubble, I would not be here today."

  • Winners Hugh Laurie and Meryl Streep set themselves above the pack by delivering the best acceptance speeches of the night.

Ah, yes, you were probably compelled to watch the whole thing, Rebecca, while the rest of us could Tivo our way through! I also loved America Ferrera’s speech, though I’ve never seen the Ugly Betty. (Loved her in “Real Women Have Curves”.) Noticed you nailed 5 of the 6 top spots with your predictions - congrats!

I can’t think of an awards show I’ve enjoyed less than this year’s Globes. Other than America Ferrera and a couple of others, real enthusiasm and joy seemed to be missing from the event.

Of course the Globes lost me this year when they chose Beyonce as a nominee for Best Actress. That was beyond silly.
