Movie Review: The Da Vinci Code

Friday May 19, 2006
Ron Howard and Tom Hanks miss the boat with this uninspired and flat adaptation of Dan Brown's controversial bestseller, The Da Vinci Code. It's sad (even disturbing) to admit but those who've banned the film may actually have done potential ticket buyers a favor.

I admit I was really looking forward to The Da Vinci Code and even re-read the book (I read it years ago and my memory of the story was hazy at best) before taking in a preview screening. Brown's book being so fresh in my mind may have had a negative impact on my view of the film, although because my review's in line with the majority of other critics, I might have given the movie version a thumbs down review even if I hadn't just finished the novel for the second time. It's tough to say. All I do know is that The Da Vinci Code movie was a huge letdown. We can only hope the rest of the big summer releases won't be equally as disappointing.

  • Alfred Molina Talks About The Da Vinci Code
Alfred Molina's last big film prior to The Da Vinci Code was Spider-Man 2. In that comic book inspired movie, Molina played a major villain. The same could also be said of his character in Ron Howard's big screen adaptation of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code.

"When you play a villain," Molina explained, "the last thing you do is in some way turn it into an attitude where you're basically telling the audience, 'I am the villain.' In the same way that if you're playing the romantic lead in the movie, you don't walk around carrying yourself around as if you're the sexiest thing in the world. That would just be really boring. So I think what you try and do is just find - I don’t like using words like 'the reality' because there's nothing real about it. But try and find that thing that's very plausible and very authentic so the audience feels comfortable about suspending their disbelief and are willing to buy you in that role and go on this journey with you." If teh reviewers did not enjoy Da Vinci - it is because their religious beliefs conflicted with the movie - I thought it was very well done!
