Who should win the Best Actor and Best Actress honors for outstanding performances in 2005? I can't see into the future but gauging by the way this award season has played out, there are a couple of frontrunners who should definitely be prepared to rattle off a list of names no one watching the Oscar telecast at home has ever heard of come Sunday night.

In the race for Best Actor it looks as though "Capote" star Philip Seymour Hoffman should walk off with this year's Academy Award. While "Brokeback Mountain" star Heath Ledger and "Walk the Line's" Joaquin Phoenix both have strong support from regular ticket buyers, Hoffman's impressive resume along with the fact his performance made even industry people who loathed Capote want to check out the film should earn him top acting honors. Hoffman's been stacking up the wins leading up to the Oscars and unless something bizarre happens come vote counting time, Hoffman should be able to wrap his fingers around the Best Actor Oscar statuette.

The Best Actress winner is really a toss up between "Transamerica" star Felicity Huffman and Reese Witherspoon from "Walk the Line." Until she hit it big with "Desperate Housewives," Huffman wasn't exactly a household name. Now with a starring role on one of TV's hottest shows and her amazing performance playing a man who is in the last stages of becoming a woman, Huffman's a force to be reckoned with. However I really believe this won't be her year to win the Best Actress award (although how cool would it be to have a Hoffman and a Huffman take home the top acting honors?). I'm predicting the Best Actress Oscar will go to Reese Witherspoon. Witherspoon's proven she can take on mainstream romantic comedy fare as well as the more intense indie films - and she's also been busy laboring behind the scenes as a producer. She snagged the Screen Actors Guild award and that shows her peers in the industry have a lot of respect for the performance she turned in as June Carter Cash. And to me, Witherspoon's the reason "Walk the Line" worked as well as it did. (Photos: "Walk the Line" © 20th Century Fox, "Capote" © Sony Pictures Classics)
