Best Actors of 2005
2005 was an infinitely better year for actors than it was for actresses and culling down my list to just five took a lot of thought. My final selections made their way onto this list after much consideration and inner debate. (Pictured: Heath Ledger and Ang Lee © Focus Features)Ralph Fiennes and Nicolas Cage came this close to being included, but ultimately neither made the final cut. The five fine actors who did wind up on my Best Of list did so because their performances were powerful and stuck with me - even if I didn't like their movie.

Best Actresses of 2005
I really thought 2004 was an abysmal year for actresses, but compared to the scant amount of quality leading roles in 2005, 2004 was a stellar year for female thespians. In fact 2005 was so bad, it took me two days of pouring over my notes from screenings this year to come up with five actresses who stood out from the pack. It's not that the caliber of acting was bad; it's just the opportunity to shine in a featured role was simply not there. (Pictured: Joan Allen © New Line Cinema)Related News:
