This Week's New Releases
Thursday August 18, 2005
It's definitely the end of the summer blockbuster season. Last week's new releases didn't have much of an impact at the box office, and this week's new releases aren't expected to light a fire under lagging ticket sales. The much-delayed sci-fi thriller "A Sound of Thunder" finally hits theaters. Based on the Ray Bradbury short story, "A Sound of Thunder" is set in the future when traveling through time is possible - and profitable. Time Safari Inc. allows weathly customers the opportunity to go back in time to hunt dinosaurs. But on one such expedition, one of the wealthy clients unwittingly alters the course of history... "A Sound of Thunder" stars Edward Burns, Ben Kingsley, and Catherine McCormack and is rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence, partial nudity, and language.
Nick Cannon stars in "Underclassman," a teen-oriented drama about a youthful-looking cop who has to go undercover to solve the murder of a local high school student. Hottie Roselyn Sanchez co-stars as a Spanish instructor who could have inspired the Van Halen song, "Hot for Teacher." "X-Men 2's" Shawn Ashmore plays a spoiled rich kid who sort of befriends the undercover officer. "Underclassman" is rated PG-13 for violence, sexual references, drug material and some teen drinking.
Director Fernando Meirelles ("City of God") takes on his first English language film with the gritty drama, "The Constant Gardener," starring Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz. Based on the best-selling John le Carré novel, "The Constant Gardener" is set in Northern Kenya and tells the gripping story of an activist (Weisz) whose murder spurs her mild-mannered husband (Fiennes) into action. "The Constant Gardener" is rated R for language, some violent images and sexual content/nudity.Box Office Report – August 26-28, 2005
Terry Gilliam's "The Brothers Grimm" couldn't knock "The 40 Year Old Virgin" out of first place at the box office. With an estimated budget of $80 million, Gilliam's "Grimm" managed to only pull in $15 million during its opening weekend - a figure much lower than the studio had projected.Meanwhile the weekend's other new releases - "The Cave" and "Undiscovered" - failed to draw audiences. But at least "The Cave" placed 5th. "Undiscovered" was basically just that - undiscovered. The Ashlee Simpson pic didn't even score a spot in the Top 10.
