Like your movies loaded with car crashes, tons of wild action scenes, and stunts involving helicopters, motorcycles, nail guns, and other assorted weapons? If the answer's yes then "The Island" is your type of movie. Michael Bay crams as many action sequences as possible into his latest big-budget flick - and also manages to address the issue of cloning humans. Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor are put through the wringer as they race around trying to stay alive instead of serving as unwilling organ donors.
The powers that be decided it was time for yet another remake and taa-daa, we have the return of the "Bad News Bears." Billy Bob Thornton takes over the role Walter Matthau made famous as a reluctant, alcoholic coach who mentors a group of rag-tag misfits. "Bad News Bears" would have struck me as much funnier had I not been a big fan of the original - and had Thornton not already gone the 'swearing at kids' route in "Bad Santa."
Director Rob Zombie continues the story of the murderous Firefly clan in "The Devil's Rejects," his sequel to "House of 1000 Corpses." Where "House of 1000 Corpses" went for campiness, "The Devil's Rejects" takes a slightly more serious tone - but that doesn't mean Zombie skimps on the blood, guts and gore. No, "The Devil's Rejects" is definitely not for the squimish.Opening This Week in Limited Release:
Box Office Report - July 15-17, 2005
Warner Bros Pictures' "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" opened with a much better than expected box office take of $56+ million, proving the box office success of "Fantastic Four" wasn't a fluke and that audiences really will return to theaters when studios give them something they're interested in spending money on. In addition to keeping the box office hopping, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" shattered an IMAX record. The Tim Burton film now holds 1st place as the IMAX movie with the biggest grossing opening weekend for a film released simultaneously in theaters. The R rated sexy comedy, "Wedding Crashers," also did better than expected. The Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn laffer brought in an incredible $32 million. You have to go all the way back to last year's big-budget epic film "Troy" to find an R rated movie that opened bigger.
