Jen and Ben Tie the Knot
Friday July 1, 2005
One-upping Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Academy Award-winner Ben Affleck ("Good Will Hunting") and "Alias" star Jennifer Garner have taken the plunge. Affleck and Garner exchanged "I Do's" and confirmed the twosome will soon become a threesome sometime in late 2005. There's no word yet on how Garner's impending motherhood will affect the upcoming season of her hit TV series though it's a certainty she'll be cutting back on the stunts for a little while. Studios are hoping their July releases will do a much better job of bringing people back to movie theaters than the films they’ve put out for public consumption during the previous six months of 2005 have managed to do. It’s no secret the box office is in an 18 week slump, and analysts have basically culled the reason behind the lack of ticket sales down to a couple of key issues: 1) Studios aren’t putting out the quality product potential ticket buyers are willing to fork over $10 to see. And 2) The popularity of home theater systems and the quick turn-around of movies onto DVD have also had an impact on ticket sales. It seems there just aren’t as many people who think it’s necessary to see a movie on the big screen to get the full impact of the film as there used to be.
Warner Bros. is banking on a couple of dramatically different films to pump up the studio's box office take. On July 15th WB is releasing the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaboration – "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." With Burton in charge of the Oompa Loompas and Depp as Willy Wonka, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's" been high on my list of 2005 movies to see. Warner Bros is also unleashing (pun intended) the romantic comedy, "Must Love Dogs," starring Diane Lane and John Cusack, aimed at adult moviegoers (and dog lovers) who really haven't had much to choose from - as far as romantic comedies go - this year.
DreamWorks and Michael Bay’s big-budget futuristic summer explosion, "The Island," hits theaters on July 22nd. Ewan McGregor (aka Obi-Wan Kenobi) plays a resident of a 'seemingly utopian but contained facility in the mid-21st century' who figures out there's something really fishy going on and nothing is as it seems… The premise sounds fairly intriguing but I’m actually only looking forward to this one because of Mr. McGregor (aka My Favorite Actor).
But the July release that's getting the most buzz is 20th Century Fox's "Fantastic Four." Starring Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis and Ioan Gruffudd as four superheroes who battle the forces of evil, this big screen adaptation of the popular comic book series has a lot riding on it. I’m not a big comic book-inspired movie fan and the trailers and clips for this film haven’t done much for me, but I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt and adopting a wait and see attitude.July's also the month "Stealth" sneaks into theaters, Jennifer Connelly gets creeped out by liquid in "Dark Water," Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston get all superhero-ish in "Sky High," and Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are on the lookout for attractive single women – and free alcohol and food – in "The Wedding Crashers."
