This Week's New Releases
Tuesday May 24, 2005
Did you see the excellent documentary "Lords of Dogtown" which chronicled how skateboarding evolved from kids riding down the sidewalk to the serious sport it is today? Well the "Lords of Dogtown" movie set for release in theaters on June 3rd is Hollywood's version of the same story. One of the guys who was responsible for changing the face of the sport, Stacy Peralta, wrote the screenplay and Emile Hirsch, Victor Rasuk, and John Robinson play the guys who really kickstarted the skateboarding craze - Jay Adams, Tony Alva, and Peralta. Since this "Lords of Dogtown" is told from Peralta's point of view, he comes out looking like a good guy while the same doesn't hold true for the rest of the Z-Boys (the group who skated for the Zephyr Surf Shop).
Russell Crowe and Ron Howard reunite for "Cinderella Man," the true story of heavyweight champion Jim Braddock. Braddock, a dedicated family man and all around decent human being, gave America something to cheer about during the Great Depression. Probably the first movie of 2005 to have a legitimate shot at being mentioned come awards season, "Cinderella Man" features another amazing performance by Crowe as well as terrific performances from Renee Zellweger, Craig Bierko, and Paul Giamatti.
Teen girls are the target audience of "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" directed by Ken Kwapis and based on Ann Brashares' best-selling book. Alexis Bledel, Amber Tamblyn, America Ferrera, and Blake Lively star as four close friends who share everything - including a pair of magical jeans.New on DVD on May 31st
Geoffrey Rush and Jesse Spencer star in the inspirational movie "Swimming Upstream;" Barry Watson goes in search of the closet monster in "Boogeyman;" and the Malmedy Massacre of World War II is the subject of the independent film "Saints and Soldiers" in this week's new releases on DVD.Box Office Report - May 27-30, 2005
